The company was founded by Carolyn Axthelm. She began in real estate in Maryland as an investor in the late 80's, while working in management for a fortune 50 insurance company. In 1991 she left management to be home more with her two children. Real estate sales worked well with her schedule and investing activities. Carolyn started in real estate sales with Prudential Preferred Properties in 1991 and soon changed to working for a discount broker. As an investor, she didn't want to pay a 6% or 7% commission and realized that other sellers felt the same way. After a short time she opened a franchise office for the discount broker and later started her own solely owned company Axthelm Real Estate Associates. When the company was incorporated the name was changed to AREA Real Estate Associates, Inc. While in Maryland the company branched into Virgina and Washington DC. However, the work in Maryland built up to the point where Virginia and Washington DC were dropped. In 2001 the company expanded to North Carolina, primarily in the Charlotte area and surrounding counties. The company has recently expanded to South Carolina and the Winston-Salem/Greensboro North Carolina markets. We continue to provide full service and discount real estate options at affordable prices. In Maryland we service primarily (but not exclusively) Montgomery, Prince Georges, Anne Arundel, Columbia and Frederick counties.
